In order to boost sericulture in Maldah District, West Bengal Government is planning to set up a silk park in the region as Dupion and Motka silk of this place are famous all over India.
In a meeting with officials and representatives of small scale industrial units on April 9, three State Ministers, Manab Mukherjee, Narayan Biswas and Sailen Sarkar discussed ways of setting up the proposed silk park.
The ministers requested the district magistrate to select a suitable land in Kaliachak area, where State Government can develop infrastructure for setting up the silk park.
According to the proposal, park would produce sufficient local cocoons for reeling of silk yarn and twisting of yarn.
Maldah produces 1,124 tons of silk yarn yearly which is around 85 percent of total output from West Bengal. The district targets to produce up to 1,500 tons of silk yarn in the next three years.
