Chennai Port drafts expansion plans

Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) will take on massive projects in next 2-3 years so as to improve and develop smooth and speedy transportation and communication system.
Of the total investment of Rs1,500 crore, around Rs750-crore will be allotted to elevated expressway from the port to Maduraivoyal.
Around Rs200 will be dedicated to upgrade the port, of which Rs40 crore, reportedly, has already been spent for road and rail network inside the port which will enable better transportation.
CnPt is aiming to become a full-fledged facility that will be capable of managing large number of containers
The Chennai port handled a record 53.4 million ton for fiscal ended March 31, 2007, 13 percent over 47.2 million ton during the previous year. The port also exceeded the Shipping Ministry's target of 52.2 million ton.
