Global warming benefits sock producers

Global warming might be a teaser for scientists across the world but cotton growers and exporters are reaping good results from this environmental hazard.

According to the Kenan Koc, President, Socks Manufacturers Association, demand for woolly and acrylic synthetic socks has decreased and there is a shout for cotton socks in market.

Turkey's exports already comprise 70 percent cotton products and this is an advantage for exporters.

Moreover, Turkey has an edge over the China, its competitor, as the latter invests more in acrylic and synthetic fibre. With its cotton infrastructure, Turkey has forestalled China. In summer, Turkey produces 100 percent cotton products and during winter, cotton production reduced to 70 percent and acrylic and synthetic mixed products fill up the balance.

Koc also added that Turkey is the second largest cotton producer in the world and it's export-oriented as 80-85 percent products are exported overseas and 15-20 percent to the local market. Size of Turkish socks industry is $1 billion.
