Textile imports inch higher

First five months of 2007, French textile production showed an increase of 1 percent in volume as compared with last year. Moreover, output grew 3 percent during the first quarter 2007.

Though being relatively stable in 2006, French textile exports recorded a fall over the first four months of year 2007 (-2 percent in value terms). This decline is linked to drop in despatches to the members of the European Union (-4 percent), while exports towards other countries increased (4 percent).

Finally, the French textile imports advanced 1 percent in value terms during January-April, 2007 period.

French Textile Exports
In Jan-April, 2007: 1.923 million euro, among which 1.248 millions for the European Union and 675 millions for other countries.

In January in April, 2007: 2.213 million euro, among which 1.435 millions from the European Union and 778 millions from other countries.

CLOTHING
In spite of the decline of the production of clothing (-4% in volume in the course of period Jan-May 2007), the incorporating turnovers delocalized units advanced of 4% according to indication DEFI-IFM. As for the foreign trade, after very good year of 2006, the exports of clothing stagnated at the beginning of this year 2007, in spite of the dynamism of deliveries for Russia (23%).

If the clothing imports registered 2% fall in value for the first four months of year 2007, imports from China grew by 32 percent. This growth was possible at the cost of decline registered from other Asian countries like India (-7 percent) or Bangladesh (-6 percent). In total, imports from entire Asia showed an increase of 5 percent.

French Clothing Exports
During Jan-April, 2007, clothing exports reched a total of 2.464 million euro; split in to European Union worth 1.701 millions and 763 millions euro for
other countries.

In the period Jan-April, 2007, clothing imports touched a figure of 4.616 million euro, 1.501 millions from the European Union and rest 3.115 millions euro from other countries.
