AWI Mr McLachlan welcomes support of Aussie wool & sheep industry taskforce

• Needleless intradermal injection – A range of chemicals have been trialled. An anionic surfactant and applicator – Skintraction – developed by Cobbett Technologies Pty Ltd, a private Sydney-based R&D company, with potential further support from AWI, shows the most promise.

• Breeding – Early “first generation” results indicate significant potential to reduce breech wrinkle, increase natural bare area, and enhance resistance to breech blowfly strike. There are a growing number of commercial and seedstock producers in Australia who have made excellent progress in this area.

AWI supports the use of a post-mulesing spray for the relief of pain. This pain relief product was developed by a private company and is being sold through veterinarians. The product is being applied to sheep by a growing number of woolgrowers and contractors across Australia.

Mr McLachlan said that while it is critical to get the alternatives to the marketplace as soon as possible, growers are innovatively managing the situation as best they can.

“Indeed, an AWI-commissioned national survey of 1410 sheep producers across Australia in February 2008, conducted by the Department of Agriculture and Food WA, found that 11.5% of the Australian wool clip will be from non-mulesed sheep,” said Mr McLachlan.

The other key findings of the survey are that:
• 32% of lambs born in 2008 will not be mulesed
• 23% of producers will not mules lambs in 2008
• 14.8% of producers have a breeding strategy that involves sourcing bare-breeched rams.

“Be assured that AWI's research and development is making strong progress in finding an alternative to the current practice of mulesing, and that AWI's management and staff remain fully committed to delivering on the industry commitment to phase out surgical mulesing by 2010,” said Mr McLachlan.
