Cotton production is growing in Tajikistan and to serve the increasing needs for storage of the same, the Ministry of Agriculture has proposed building of two large customs warehouses for storing the raw cotton fibre.
This was mentioned by the Agriculture Minster Qosim Qosimov. The warehouses will be built with support of the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank under their farming schemes and the ministry and the financial institutions had signed agreements for the same, he added by saying.
One of the storage buildings will be built in Khatlon and the other in Sughd and the warehousing costs will be kept at a nominal 0.1–0.5 percent of cost of one ton of processed cotton.
According to the Minister, these two warehouses will help the poor cotton farmers who were at the mercy of cotton ginners for their storage purposes. The farmers used to store their processed cotton at ginneries, who charged very high rates for the same.
