US College Juniors are invited to apply for research grants through the AATCC Foundation/Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) Undergraduate Research Program. ITT will fund up to five awards each year for research in textile engineering or chemistry, and polymer or materials science.

All required application materials must be delivered to ITT by 5:00 p.m. on January 16 to qualify for these US$2,000 grants (if an outstanding proposal is presented, a higher level of funding may be awarded).

FUNDING:
The unique element of this program is that awards are paid directly to the student. Half of the award is given in the spring semester of the junior year, and half will be given when the final research report is submitted in the fall semester of the senior year. Students are responsible for allocating the funds for supplies, lab testing, machine time, etc., and may retain any remaining funds after research expenses are covered.

PROFESSIONAL CONTACTS:
Award recipients will have the opportunity to present their research at ITT's Spring Meeting during their senior year. At the meeting, students can interact with the CEOs and researchers of today's leading global textile companies. ITT will also pay all travel expenses for two deserving students based on the quality of their research findings.

APPLICATIONS:
The deadline is fast approaching and faculty letters are required, so students should start putting their applications together today! Proposals must fall within one of the areas of interest defined by ITT and follow specific guidelines. Visit www.aatcc.org/foundation/research.htm or www.itt.edu for details.

Areas of interest include:
•Advanced chemical analysis of wastewater
•Branding of fiber, yarn, or textile products for apparel consumers
•Ecological base cloth inkjet printing
•Energy and water reclamation
•Fiber trends
•Green marketing
•Machine trends
•Market demand for environmentally sustainable textile products
•Non-aqueous dyeing
•Reduction of slashing costs
•Removal of antimony from textile wastewater
•Sizing chemistry for staple yarns
•Textiles as active substrate in fuel or solar cells
•Total energy use models for weaving machines
