Turkmenistan has reportedly harvested more than 1 million tons of cotton, or more precisely 1000011 tons of the white gold. Currently, 35 cotton ginning units are busy and are continuing processing of the new crop in full fledge.
Grown on around half of all irrigated land in Turkmenistan, cotton is one of the country's most important exports. With the 2007 harvest of 920,000 tons, Turkmenistan is the second-largest cotton producer in the former Soviet Union after Uzbekistan. However, the crop yield has been steadily declining since independence because of poor irrigation and poor agriculture practices.
The main provinces which have substantial production of cotton are Lebap, Mary and Akhal with other provinces like Babadayhan, Karakum, Yolatan also contributing to the country's cotton production. The state owned Turkmencotton has provided a good number of tractors, trolleys and farm equipment to the collective farms for better productivity.
