Swedish Hästens puts its head to rest in Santa Barbara

For Spencer and Karen Simcik, the “a-ha!” moment of opening a Hästens bedding store came while they were literally lying down, looking up at the ceiling in the Hästens manufacturing plant in Koping, Sweden.
Selected from 400 independent sleep retailers, the Simcik's were awarded the company's 23rd official retail store in the U.S. The showroom is located at 909 De La Vina in Santa Barbara.
In an industry where comfort is often traded for lower cost, Hästens keeps its focus on quality, utilizing craftsmanship that has been passed down from generation to generation. For more than 150 years the family-run company has been producing all-natural beds by hand using only natural filling materials, including clean horsehair, cotton, wool and flax, which is great news for those who suffer from allergies.
In their current store, Santa Barbara Mattress, the Simcik's have grown the organic and natural bed selection to the largest in the state of California.
“We firmly believe healthy beds produce a healthy life,” Karen says. “Quality sleep affects our immune system, healing ability, temperament, memory, energy levels, and learning ability.”
The new Santa Barbara store features the complete line of Hästens beds and accessories, including Hästens specialty down pillows and duvets, luxurious linens, and its signature blue-and-white check sleepwear.
“Most Americans invest more time and research buying an automobile or a television set than a bed,” Spencer says. “In Sweden and Europe it is an entirely different paradigm where buying a mattress is considered part of the culture's health regiment. With individuals spending close to one-third of their lifetime in bed, I believe if you spend just five minutes on a Hästens bed it will change your perception of what comfort, support and luxury really is.”
In celebration of the company's Swedish roots, Stockholm Krystal Vodka will officially sponsor a media and industry grand opening event at Hästens showroom, and also mix martinis with its popular Stockholm Krystal Dirty Martini Mix, which uses the highest-quality flavor-rich olives from the Santa Barbara Olive Company.
