Dr. Stefan Mecheels elected to RAL Executive Committee

At its general meeting on 14 May 2009, the RAL Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung e. V. elected Dr. Stefan Mecheels, director of the Forschungszentrum Hohenstein Institute in Boennigheim, to the position of Vice President in its seven-member Executive Committee.
In this vein, the RAL committee honoured the many years of successful work conducted by the Hohenstein Institute for the Gütegemeinschaft sachgemäße Wäschepflege e. V. (Quality Mark Association for the Proper Care of Laundry) as well as for the Gütezeichengemeinschaft Medizinische Kompressionsstrümpfe e. V. (Quality Mark Association for Medical Compression Hosiery).
The Hohenstein Institute has been the headquarters of Gütegemeinschaft sachgemäße Wäschepflege e. V since 1972 and has been entrusted with the monitoring of applicable quality assessments at the more than 360 commercial laundries worldwide which are registered as members since 1959.
Furthermore, experts from the institute also provide significant support to the quality mark association and its members through knowledge transfer from industry-related research projects, and are also involved in the further development of RAL quality requirements as well as the expansion of RAL application areas for laundry services.
For example, in 1986 and 1999 additional quality labels for the professional cleaning of hospital laundry (RAL-GZ 992/2) and laundry from food operations (RAL-GZ 882/2) were introduced to the market in addition to the original RAL quality labels 992/1 for household and commercial laundry.
More recently the Gütegemeinschaft sachgemäße Wäschepflege also established the RAL quality assessments on an international level with great success. Currently there are twelve member operations in Japan, nine in Slovenia, four in Switzerland as well as an additional seven laundries in China, France, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Austria and Turkey.
The Hohenstein Institute has been working with the Gütezeichengemeinschaft Medizinische Kompressionsstrümpfe e. V. since the latter's creation. At present they are the only RALrecognised inspection agency which may audit compliance with quality assessments for medical compression hosiery (RAL-GZ 387/1) - as well as medical compression arm sleeves (RAL-GZ 387/2) with respect to the required design features and compression properties.
In addition, Hohenstein experts also provide advice to the technical committee of the quality mark association with regard to the optimisation and updating of applicable inspection provisions and quality requirements.
