Japan's Ministry of Trade and Industry (METI) has recently completed a report on global petrochemical market trend and the report indicates that there will be a global excess supply of 9.6 million tons of ethylene derivatives in 2013.

The report says that growth rate of global demand for ethylene derivatives will be 2.3 percent in the period 2009 to 2013 and excess supply capacity will increase from the current 4.6 million tons to 9.60 million tons in 2013.

The report also predicts that global production capacity of ethylene derivatives will increase to 159.6 million tons in 2013. By 2013, production capacity of ethylene derivatives in China, ASEAN countries and India will rapidly expand.

Production capacity in the Middle East will reach 25.8 million tons per year in 2013, more than double, when compared to that of 2007.

As China's demand for ethylene derivatives will retain a high growth in the next few years, its imports of ethylene derivatives will be close to 10 million tons in 2013, while exports from the Middle East will reach 17.9 million tons.

Over the same period, production of propylene derivatives in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East region will rapidly increase and global excess capacity of propylene derivatives too will exceed drastically by 2013.
