Subsequent to its acquisition of Danish biosciences company Danisco, US-based chemical major E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Co., or DuPont is now planning to expand in Indian industrial biosciences business space.

The DuPont Group intends to offer products, including renewably sourced materials like fibre for producing carpets, fabrics and bioactive products like enzymes, which find utility in textiles and chemical industries, to the Indian market.

The senior management team of DuPont’s industrial biosciences business, which visited India to study the prospects of expansion in this space, said they have identified textiles, fabric care and households as key areas for expansion. Also, they underscored the importance of biofuel sector in India.

During a media briefing in Mumbai, Du Pont Industrial Biosciences President Jim Collins said they are trying to better understand the demand of Indian consumers through market research and local advisors.

The Group intends to establish an application development centre for industrial biosciences at its DuPont Knowledge Centre in Hyderabad, which would require the company to add 50 new employees to its existing staff of 50, Mr. Collins said.

Mr. Collins said the new investment would help them develop science specific to the needs of Indian markets and stand to the challenges and bank on opportunities coming with a growing middle class.

The Group, which took over Danisco for a price of US$ 5.8 billion in 2011, is also examining the prospects of synergies between the Danish firm’s Indian subsidiary and its Genencor biosciences arm in India.

Offering technologies for segments like textile, biofuels and fabric care, the industrial biosciences business of DuPont last year contributed about US$ 1.2 billion to its global revenues.

Operating with a staff of at least 4,000 people, the Group marks its presence in India since 1994.
