Woolgrowers support continuation of 2% compulsory grower levy

National woolgrower representative body WoolProducers has welcomed the results of the 2006 WoolPoll, which confirmed that Australian woolgrowers support the continuation of the current 2 percent compulsory grower levy.

WoolProducers President Robert Pietsch said that the organisation strongly supports the levy system, which has delivered significant benefits to growers through industry funded innovation and demand creation activities.

“WoolProducers supported a vote of at least two per cent, so we are pleased that the status quo has been achieved, albeit at the lower end of the scale,” said Mr Pietsch.

“However, with the contracting Australian wool clip, the challenge is there for the AWI board to meet grower's expectations across both R&D and demand creation portfolios.”

“WoolProducers firmly believes that the only mechanism for the collection of funds in Australia for marketing and innovation in the wool industry is through the WoolPoll.”

Mr Pietsch also described as 'extremely significant' the results of supplementary questions in the WoolPoll, where wool growers overwhelmingly endorsed the extension on the current levy to wool harvested by alternative methods such as biological harvesting and fellmongering.

“It is outdated and simply unfair that some in the parts of the industry don't pay the levy, yet continue to reap the benefits of the innovation and promotion activities of Australian Wool Innovation.”

“Itis particularly ironic that grower's levies have funded the development of biological harvesting methods, yet those that benefit from this technology don't contribute to the levy.”
