West European fibre imports down

1 min read

Western Europe's imports of raw fibre (greasy, scoured and carbonised wool) from all countries fell moderately during 2004 compared with 2003. Import of wool top and other semi-processed wool also fell.

The first quarter of 2005 offered no improvement with shipments of raw and semi-processed (mainly apparel type) wool from Australia, South Africa, Argentina and Uruguay lower in volume compared to the same period the previous year.

Australia accounted for the lion's share of greasy, scoured and carbonised wool imported from countries outside WE during 2004, increasing share at the expense of South American apparel fibre suppliers.

Of mainly non-apparel wool imports, New Zealand's share remained the same in 2004 but saw a drop in the first quarter of 2005. China and Turkey were the other main suppliers of carpet wool types to Western Europe.
