Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) released EU wool trade updates.
EU-15 imports of raw, carded and combed wool fell moderately (by volume) in the seven months ending July 2005. Imports of wool fibre by the EU-10 acceding countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus) by contrast showed a marginal increase during the same period.
Imports of wool suitable for carpet use showed the largest decline compared with those wools most suitable for apparel use. Imports from both New Zealand and the UK were lower.
Of the leading apparel wool fibre suppliers, imports from Australia accounted for over one third of all non-EU wool imports, those imports still lower than 2004. However, imports from South Africa were up. Notably, one of the fastest growing suppliers of wool to the EU was China (mainly scoured and wool top).
The European wool industry continues to feel pressure from non-EU imports in both textiles and apparel from China. Imports of wool textiles from China increased during January-July 2005 compared with January-July 2004. During the same period, wool apparel imports expanded rapidly. The volume growth of EU imports from China has been much faster than value growth.
First established as a subsidiary of Australian Wool Services in 2001, Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) became a fully independent public company limited by shares and owned by Australian woolgrowers in 2002.
