Minister of State for International Development of the United Kingdom (UK), Mr. Alan Duncan has arrived in Dhaka to discuss problems faced by those working in readymade garment (RMG) units in Bangladesh, according to a statement of the British High Commission in Dhaka, BSS reported.

During his stay, the visiting Minister would meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and the Leader of the Opposition Begum Khaleda Zia, the statement said.

He will also meet retail buyers, workers and others involved in the garment supply chain and explore how working conditions and safety of the employees can be improved.

The UK is the third largest single destination for Bangladesh RMG exports and there is growing concern among UK consumers about the safety of clothing workers in the wake of the collapse of the Rana Plaza building that house five garment factories and resulted in the death of over 1,100 workers.

Mr. Duncan would also assess the progress made by UK Aid in promoting development and economic prosperity in Bangladesh—the fourth largest recipient of aid under the UK Government’s country development programme.
