The garment industry of Myanmar is set to establish ‘Made in Myanmar’ as a global brand to promote garments made in Myanmar in the international market, Myanmar Business Today reported.

The secretary of the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA), Daw Khaing Khaing New, said that although some clothes are currently being shipped with ‘Made in Myanmar’ labels, production using only domestic materials will take some time due to limited access to materials, finance, and technology .

The chairperson of MGMA, U Myint Soe said the East Asian markets have been a major destination for Myanmar garments, but after Myanmar was included in the European GSP (Generalised System of Preferences), they have received investment and orders from western countries as well.

Additionally, the Japanese External Trade Organization (JETRO) has supported the local garment industry of Myanmar by bringing together industry players from Japan and Myanmar through meetings, where they can form a network and share experiences.

Currently, local garment producers in Myanmar mostly deliver orders for small quantities of apparel with specific designs and usually earn revenue from local and foreign businesses and by charging service fees.

More than 20 countries, including Japan, China, Malaysia and Germany, are investing in Myanmar’s garment industry, with much of the export market focused on Japan. (GK)
