Global ethylene producers increased more than 7 million tons per year of new ethylene production capacity in 2008, mostly in the Middle East, according to the latest report from the US "Oil and Gas Journal".

Ethylene capacity increased substantially in 2008, when compared with the previous two years. In 2007, new ethylene capacity addition stood at 2 million tons per year, while that of 2006 was only 245,000 tons per year.

As of January 1, 2009, worldwide ethylene production capacity has reached 126.7 million tons per year. In comparison, worldwide ethylene capacity was 119.6 million tons per year in the last survey, representing an increase of nearly 6 percent.

It is expected that in 2009, new ethylene capacity addition will total up to 10 million tons per year. Last year's report had indicated that new capacity addition in 2010 will be 17 million tons per year, but a number of projects have been delayed or discontinued.
