Chinese experts to assist West Bengal in silk sericulture

A six-member delegation of Chinese experts are on a visit to the state of West Bengal from November 17 to 22 to find out the areas of cooperation for development of mulberry sericulture as the state has sought Chinese expertise for sericulture and silk promotion in the state.

Mr. Yao Xizhen, Professor of Sericulture and Agri Food Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in China, heads this Chinese team.

In order to spot the areas of improvement, these Chinese experts would be taken to state's districts such as Malda, Murshidabad and Birbhum, informed a Minister.

Vareities of silk such as mulberry, tasar, eri and muga, which are widely consumed for the commercial purpose, are produced in the state since long.

Annual production of mulberry silk and tasar silk in the state is around 1,750 tons and 30 tons respectively.
