The Odisha government unveiled a special scheme to provide financial assistance to senior and skilled handloom weavers of the state on the occasion of National Handloom Day.

Under the scheme, weavers over 60 years of age, who have worked over 20 years would receive financial assistance of Rs 500 per month while weavers over 80 years of age with the same experience will receive Rs 700.

According to chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who announced the scheme, the government has implemented various schemes by providing them with houses, solar lanterns and handloom equipment.

Snehangiri Chhuria, the textile and handloom minister said textile inspectors will visit the house of each weaver to find out their requirements in order that their livelihood may be improved.

“Site specific surveys will help the government to do its best to solve the problems, as requirements of the weaving community differ from region to region,” she added. (AR)
