US plus-size apparel market to grow faster: report

US plus-size apparel market to grow faster: report
The women’s plus-size apparel market has been growing faster than the overall US apparel market and analysts foresee the segment showing such a trend in future, says a report by New York-based Coresight Research. Many retailers have revamped or expanded their plus-size offerings to better serve this segment and take advantage of the opportunity, it said.

More retailers and brands are likely to prioritise this segment in coming years, the report, released recently by the company, said.

US shoppers spent $21.4 billion on women’s plus-size clothing in 2016, according to The NPD Group.

Consumer survey data indicate that more than a quarter of US women browse plus-size clothing.

While newer retailers like Torrid and Eloquii have emerged to serve younger and more style-conscious shoppers in this segment, JCPenney has invested in its plus-size offering and Walmart is reportedly set to unveil its new, low-cost plus-size apparel brand, the report said.

The obesity rate among US women aged 20 and over is nearly 38 per cent, according to data from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The average American woman now wears a size 16–18.

However, consumer surveys indicate that only about a fourth of US women browse plus-size apparel, suggesting that women who wear plus sizes under-spend on apparel relative to their proportion of the US population.

This may be due, in part, to consumers’ dissatisfaction with the range of choices available, the report added. (DS)
