Imagine a textile - woven, knitted, crocheted or made in any other manner. Blow it up to huge proportions, say twenty feet high by thirty to forty feet in length. Instead of yarn or other fabric, use industrial, found, and surplus materials. Now imagine a group of people on Milner Plaza between July 20 and August 10, 2007 making this gigantic textile piece using their bodies as tools.

That is what will be happening for one month this summer on Museum Hill'sT Milner Plaza. Big Fiber/Human Tools was conceived by museum staff who invited fiber artist Tracy Krumm to implement the installation as part of the museum's current exhibition, Needles and Pins: Textiles and Tools (through April 13, 2008).

Krumm will act as designer and choreographer. Whether the technique is knitting, macramé, or weaving, Krumm will have a finished piece in mind and use participants (recruited or the random public) to carry the elements, as a shuttle or knitting needle would.

Museum patrons entering or leaving may stop for a moment to add to Big Fiber/Human Tools. Anyone else on Museum HillT and the general public are encouraged to participate in creating this giant textile installation. The piece might be made as 2 - 3 separate works, joined together, showcasing more than one technique. People wishing to participate are asked to call the Museum's main number 476-1200 for hours, days, and times.

Big Fiber/Human Tools will be ephemeral and will hang in a specified location on the plaza for a period of time. This program will give participants a visceral sense of the process involved in looping, knotting or interlacing and it will also be fun, creating the opportunity for people to participate in a group art work that is both intellectual and physical. The finished piece, or pieces, would hang as a tangible reminder of the experience.

Tracy Krumm is a Visiting Assistant Professor and Anni Albers Scholars Program Faculty at North Carolina State University in the Department of Art & Design. She teaches studio courses in textile processes and 3-D textile techniques. For eight years prior to that she was a practicing artist in Santa Fe and her work was represented by Linda Durham.
