Exports to Taiwan is expected to increase by two folds by next year, with the availability of a duty-free facility, that Taiwanese Government is offering for the least developed countries.

Bangladeshi Government is advised to authorize the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) to issue Certificate of Origin so that local exporters can avail of such a facility.

In this way Bangladesh can establish a smooth diplomatic relation with Taiwan. However, Frank Wen-Yan Chen, representative, Taipei Liaison Office in Dhaka, stated that many LDCs benefit from the Taiwanese duty-free access without establishing any diplomatic ties.

Near about 140 products from Bangladesh to which Taiwan Government allowed a zero tariff include leather, footwear, jute yarn, woven fabrics, wool yarn, handbags, sacks and bags.

Sources from Export Promotion Bureau (Textile Cell) told Fibre2fashion, “Certificate of Origin is yet not issued and first, Taiwanese Government needs to complete certain formalities, then only we can issue the certificate.”

Experts are of the opinion, if every thing goes in a desired way, Bangladesh may fetch over US $50 million from exporting to Taiwan in the coming fiscal. In 2006-07, the country exported goods worth $21.07 million to Taiwan, while its import stood at $472.91 million.
