Kongu region should double textile exports- Maran

Kongu region in Tamil Nadu, which includes Coimbatore, Tirupur, Palladam, Erode and Karur, shares around 25 percent of country's total textile exports. It should double its annual textile exports from Rs 210 billion to Rs 400 billion by the year 2015, said the Union Textile Minister, Mr. Dayanidhi Maran.
The Minister was addressing the Indian Textile Young Entrepreneurs Conference and Development of SMEs. He appealed to the young generation to set up individual targets and focus on vision 2015 as he believes that the country can achieve export target only if every individual exporter attains his or her individual target first.
He underlined that the youth should be ambitious and should exploit every available opportunity, and pay active contribution in achieving ministry's target. The Minister offered an opening to the young textile entrepreneurs to participate in ministry's textile delegations when it visits foreign countries, so that the entrepreneurs can enjoy the opportunities.
He further said that the recent trip of textile ministry to Japan helped double exports from $150 million to $300 million. He further divulged that, around 60 buyers from various European countries are visiting India next week to participate in a buyer-seller meet in Delhi which is an outcome of Textile Minister's recent visit to Europe.
Consumption of man-made fibre would prove to be an integral step to achieve ministry's target, said the Minister adding that the ministry will allocate more funds to develop the consumption of man-made fibres.
The exporters should concentrate on synthetic-wear in a bid to double the exports of the region as it already has huge potential for manufacturing active wear, sports wear and lingerie, stated Ms. Rita Menon, union textiles secretary.
