BÖNNIGHEIM (hm) Prof. Dr. h. c. Josef Kurz from the Hohenstein Institutes is celebrating a very special anniversary.
Since he joined the independent textile research centre in Bönnigheim on 1 April 1957, the internationally acclaimed scientist and his team have been responsible for numerous innovations for the textile care industry in the areas of colorimetry, textile clean-ing, laundry technology, ecology, hygiene and medical textiles, and have also been able to develop promising new areas of research and fields of business for the textile and clothing industry over these 50 years through interdisciplinary cooperation with other organisations both in Germany and abroad.
From a modest background, on leaving school, Josef Kurz initially followed an apprenticeship in dyeing and dry cleaning in a small dyehouse close to his home town of Illertissen. Fascinated by the possibilities of industrial dyeing, he followed his vocation after two years as an apprentice and trained as a textile engineer at the Hohenstein Technical Academy.
Josef Kurz initially began his career at the Hohenstein Institutes as an assistant in the chemical laboratory, where his work entailed colour measurement and determining the degree of whiteness.
In 1963 he took over the dry cleaning operations at Schloss Hohenstein which were carried out on the Institute's premises. However, following modernisation of the cleaning facilities, he decided only to use the available technological resources for research and teaching in the field of commercial textile cleaning from 1965 onwards.
