Saudi Kayan to start cracker in second half of 2010

Saudi Kayan Petrochemicals Company intends to kick start operations for its first unit at Jubail petrochemicals complex, in the second half of 2010 while starting its other units steadily through the year.
A division of the world's biggest petrochemical company by market value, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), Kayan is located at Jubail, which houses petrochemical industries.
According to Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Thunayan, Chairman, Sabic, demand for petrochemicals is on a continuous high and its prices too have improved.
Kayan's first unit will be the complex's main facility, an ethylene cracker, informed, Mutlaq al-Morished, Chief Financial Officer, Sabic and Chairman, Kayan. He continued, “Utility operations are already in full swing and in the second half of 2010, we will start production. Slowly thereafter, operations of other plants will commence in 2011-12.”
He added by saying that, “Since they are setting up 16 petrochemical plants, it will obviously take time. The project will have a yearly manufacturing capacity of 6 million tonnes of petrochemicals which will also include ethylene, propylene and ethylene glycol.”
